An event hosted by the Sexploratorium.
I walk into a store that is mostly pink and I immediately feel embraced as I am surrounded by vaginas. Vagina-shaped pins, vaginas on books, vaginas as wall art, it was just bursting with inclusion. I see rainbow flags and magic-wand-shaped earings… that you can actually turn on. I make my way to the back there are tables with paper and pins. My friend and I take our seats and wait for everyone to arrive.
Flawn explains that she is one of the owners of the Sexploratorium, she has been teaching for over 20 years and just loves talking about all things sex. And today we will be talking about the evolution of the sex toy. One of my favorite things to talk about. She starts wayyyyy in the Before Common Era (BCE) with pictures of rocks that have been shaped into dildos. We learned about the first STEAM-powered mechanical vibrator, and how the healthcare system played a part in motivation to invest in such a luxury massager. I loved the moments we had to sit and ponder. We were asked to reflect on how we thought sex toys influenced the women’s rights movement. I shared that “sex toys meant women did not have to worry about pregnancy. Their orgasms were not tied to having a child.” Someone else shared that women were shamed for ever admitting to masturbating, but that there was so much power in not needing a partner to find pleasure.
We end the discussion listing out some of the more modern styles of sex toys: the rabbit, the rose, dragon-shipped dildos, and highly recommended sex machines. https://amzn.to/49baIdQ We sit and chat for a few more moments sharing stories and brainstorming ideas for hosting our own educational event. I love these spaces that allow us to share the knowledge that we’ve all experienced over the years.
